Wow, I knew there was something strange about this guy. His 'feuds' with other makeup celebrities were a little under my radar at the time. I did follow Jeffree Starr for a bit and know there was drama. Maybe I'm remembering wrong. However, I got a weird vibe from James and never really cared about him that much. I feel like his folks didn't necessarily do anything 'bad' per se with not wanting him to wear makeup outside the house. He was their child and putting him out there in full glam was like painting a target on him for haters. Anyway, glad his brother has a career for now and saves his money. He won't be a model for long so financial security is key.

Jen, I pulled the 2023 income discloser if you want it. MLM disclosures in general are so fascinating to me. They're all the same for all MLMs, with the bulk of reps making next to nothing. There were just over 20k Seint artists in 2023 at levels 1 and 2 and the average incomes are barely higher than they were in 2020, $77 and $985. MLMs fascinate me and creep me out so much. I watch anti-MLM content sometimes and am so baffled by it all.

In the quote from the NYC dermatologist talking about using salmon "serum," the derm says that "DNA is composed of amino acids," which is completely FALSE. i have no clue how an actual dermatologist could get that so wrong (or how nobody who published this quote in the article noticed), but DNA is made of nucleotides, not amino acids. Amino acids make up proteins, and DNA is not a protein (because DNA is made of nucleotides!!) . I am going to hope this was somehow a simple mistake, but it is still horrifying to see someone who spent years studying the human body in med school/residency/etc get the basic make up of DNA soooo wrong.

Have you heard @RobertWelsh's opinion of the quality of Seint makeup? It's not good.

I think this is going to be the new MLM business structure and more companies will be making the change. Not only are people becoming more educated on MLM's and refusing to join, but they are reporting them. I think MLM's run a real risk of being shut down as pyramid schemes, so they need to adapt.

One thing I will say is that he is very talented but as a person his values or personality are a 0

So here’s just my opinion about seint because I follow many “top sellers/recruiters”. All of them have the same script of positivity. They feel bad for the others that built teams but them personally? They’re fine. They just love the product. Are happy to be affiliates. What threw me off were that these same people were bragging after their big February recruitment event of having hundreds and HUNDREDS of new people on their team. One even said her down line is like 430 some people. What do these people all have in common? They were a part of the inner circle that was notified by Seint a week and a half earlier than the general announcement to regular folk. Many mentioning they had signed NDA’s to keep the announcement under wraps. I think the NDA may likely have included more incentive for a positive spin on things once the news broke.

You do such a good job with this series. I only know a very little bit about James Charles. So, you taught me a lot. Clearly, his life has many perplexing chapters. Thanks for illuminating them in such a concise way.

*hairstylist of 14 years here 👋 - i've followed quite a few hair influencers and even former colleagues get sucked into the BIG haircare MLM. So many of them have had to do a massive rebrand because they topped out and lost their credibility as stylists. When you are a corporate marketing cog who pushes products HARD, your clientele notices. MLMs go a step further and want to loop in your client to sell products. No brand is going to work for everyone. If these "makeup artists" are professionals, they should assess their options and work with brands that align with their preferences,values, clientele, etc. From the perspective of the hair world, this affiliate structure is honestly very very generous, especially if its being drop shipped to the consumer and not just sold as wholesale.
